Let's face reality: If you can't be on the first page of results for a given search, you simply aren't going to get many visitors from search engines. In highly competitive categories, there are many, many dollars being spent to be in that top spot, and unless you are willing to play what has now become a very expensive game, you will not be there. It's not so difficult if you are in a business with a specific niche, or not many competitors. This subject has become so complicated, and there are so many wild claims out there, it just can't be covered adequately here.

Does that mean forget the search engines? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! You do need to register with the MAJOR ones so that someone looking for you can find you, and your site should be designed to help you with ranking well. What it does mean is that until you have developed your site to the point where it is effective with your EXISTING SPHERE OF INFLUENCE and EXISTING MARKETING EFFORTS, you should not spend an extrordinary amount of energy and money with search engines. After all, your sphere is a MUCH better audience than someone poking around on a search engine who may or may not even be a quality lead!!

How about those companies that will (for a fee) register you with THOUSANDS of search engines? Keep in mind that ALMOST ALL search engine traffic is generated by the top 5 search engines.
